The under 3’s room welcomes children aged 2 to 3 years. This room is
equipped to build on already developed skills and new skills, as well as
allowing opportunities’ for independence to grow in preparation for Preschool.
The adult to child ratio is 1:4
The children will start to transition into this room from the Baby room, at
around the age of two years, or it may be dependent on your child’s
stage or development. During the transitional process your child will visit the
room in preparation for the move. There is a key worker system in place
across the whole nursery; your child’s keyworker will support you and your
child during the transition. If your child is joining us at the age of 2 years, you
will be offered two taster sessions,
1. Taster Session 1 consists of a 1 hour stay and play with the parent/career where they are introduced to their child’s keyworker and other staff working with the room, as well as ensuring all personal and individual needs are shared to ensure a smooth transition.
2. Taster Session 2 consists of a 2 hour ‘stay and play’ without their parent/career.
The Under 3’s Room follows the Early Years Foundation Stage, Development Matter 2021. The room covers all 7 areas of learning,
1. Communication and Language
2. Personal, Social and Emotional Development
3. Physical Development
4. Literacy
5. Mathematics
6. Understanding the World
7. Expressive Arts and Design
All areas of learning are changed and enhanced on a regularly basis to meet each child’s needs and interests. These areas are small world, role play, construction, home corner, sensory area, reading/cosy area, water play, sand, malleable, painting and mark making. For some children who still require an afternoon nap, there is space and opportunity for this.
We have a dance/drama teacher that attends the setting once a week for children to join in, this is from an outside agency.
You will have access to your child’s learning journey via an APP called Capture Education. On here you will also get daily updates on what your child is up to at nursery, e.g. eating, sleeping, toileting and learning including pictures/videos.
We encourage and promote independence to give the children the best start in Preschool. Ways in which we promote independence is
· Self-dressing,
· Pouring drinks and self-service,
· Giving the children choice, supporting them in making decisions.
At the right time, when your child is ready developmentally, we also support our parents with toilet training; we know this can be a daunting process for both the parents and children. Children have access to a toilet and potty within the room. Parents are encouraged to bring in plenty of spare clothing and underwear.
